You shouldn't be using your landing gear to take the pressure off of the sliding 5th wheel hitch. You will unlock the slider putting it into the maneuvering position and pull forward which will allow the hitch to slide back and offer you a wider turning clearance. If you're having issues locking it back into place after maneuvering then you're not fully in place and can just back up a few feet to get it in the correct position to lock. On Ford trucks, they tend to have a "Smart Tow" package which only sends power to the 12 volt pin when the vehicle is in gear. You can verify it by checking if there's power when your truck is in park versus putting the truck in drive and applying the parking brake. When this happens, you can do a trailer package bypass where you run a wire directly from the battery.

However, you will need to either install the system inside the cab of the vehicle or install the system outside the cab and simply use some air brake anti-freeze when winter rolls around which is the option I recommend. I am sorry Lippert did not include their instructions with your Lippert Trailair Air Ride 5th Wheel Pin Box # LC158778 but I have included a link to them on the Lippert website.
I also linked an image of page 3 from those instructions which shows the height measurement to be taken on both the original pin box and the Trailair. The torque setting for the 5/8-inch bolts is 160 ft-lbs minimum and this information appears on page 4.
